What Are Hand Veins and Why Do They Become More Visible?
Prominent veins on the hands are typically a cosmetic issue that develops as part of the natural aging process. While some people are simply born with larger or more visible hand veins, for many, changes in the skin and soft tissue over time make the veins stand out more.
As we get older, the fat and collagen in our hands decrease, leaving the veins and tendons more exposed. Without the soft tissue that once cushioned them, the veins appear more pronounced.
Other contributing factors include:
- Genetics — some people naturally have more prominent veins
- Low body fat — which reduces natural padding around the veins
- Frequent hand use or activities that increase vascular visibility
These veins are not harmful, but they can significantly affect how your hands look — making them appear older, thinner, or more “veiny” than you’d like.

How Sclerotherapy Treats Prominent Hand Veins
Sclerotherapy is a time-tested technique used to close unwanted veins with a medical solution. For hand veins, Dr. Park uses polidocanol, a well-studied sclerosing agent that is injected directly into the targeted veins.
- Once injected:
The solution irritates the vein lining, triggering inflammation and gentle internal scarring. - This causes the vein to shrink and eventually close, allowing blood to reroute through deeper, less visible veins.
- The result is a smoother, more natural look to the hands without surgery or downtime.
Because these superficial hand veins are not medically necessary, treating them for cosmetic reasons is safe and does not impact circulation.
Highlights:
- In-office, non-surgical treatment
- No anesthesia required
- Quick injections with a small needle
- Minimal discomfort

What to Expect During & After Treatment
What to Expect During Treatment
Your visit will begin with a detailed consultation and vein assessment by Dr. Park. Once the treatment plan is confirmed, sclerotherapy is performed in-office, and typically takes less than 30 minutes.
The injections are done with a fine needle and are usually well tolerated. Most patients describe the sensation as a small pinch or stinging, but not painful.
After the injections:
- Your hands will be gently wrapped in compression bandages.
- You’ll be asked to limit activities that involve heavy hand use for the rest of the day.
This treatment does not require anesthesia, and you can return home immediately following the procedure.
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery from hand vein sclerotherapy is simple and typically uneventful. Some mild swelling or bruising is expected but usually resolves within a few days.
To support optimal healing:
- Keep hands elevated as much as possible for the first 24 hours
- Avoid typing, lifting, or strenuous hand activities during that time
- Remove wraps after 24 hours, unless instructed otherwise
You’ll return to the clinic in approximately 4 weeks for a follow-up visit. At that time, Dr. Park may recommend additional treatment for any remaining visible veins.
Recovery Overview:
- Mild swelling and bruising may last 24–48 hours
- Temporary hand wraps worn after treatment
- Light activity encouraged, but avoid excessive hand strain
How Long Do Results Last?
Once treated, hand veins typically do not return, although new veins can gradually become visible over time due to natural aging or body changes. For most patients, touch-ups are only needed every few years, if at all.
Maintaining overall skin health and avoiding activities that excessively stress the hands can help preserve your results longer.

Can You Prevent or Slow the Appearance of Hand Veins?
While hand veins are largely influenced by age and genetics, there are a few steps you can take to support hand health:
- Hydrate and moisturize regularly to maintain skin elasticity
- Protect your hands from sun exposure, which can accelerate aging
- Use supportive gloves for activities that cause repeated strain
- Maintain a balanced lifestyle, as extreme leanness may contribute to vein prominence
Though prevention isn’t always possible, early treatment can reduce the need for more extensive care later.
